The 30:70 Weightage Rule

Calculating your percentage manually can be confusing because IGNOU doesn't print a final percentage. For standard theory subjects, they apply a specific weightage:

  • Assignments = 30% Weightage
  • Term-End Exam (TEE) = 70% Weightage

Many simple calculators just add up your totals and divide by the number of subjects. This is incorrect.

How to Calculate IGNOU Percentage (30:70 Weightage Explained)

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) uses a unique credit-weighted average system combined with a 30:70 weightage rule to calculate your final percentage. Because IGNOU Grade Cards do not explicitly state your final percentage, understanding this calculation is critical for applying to higher education or jobs.

1. The 30:70 Weightage Formula

For standard theory subjects, your final marks are calculated by taking 30% of your Assignment marks and 70% of your Term-End Examination (TEE) marks.

  • Assignment Weightage: 30%
  • Term-End Exam (TEE) Weightage: 70%
  • Formula: (Assignment Marks × 0.30) + (TEE Marks × 0.70) = Subject Marks

2. Passing Marks for Bachelors and Masters

A crucial rule at IGNOU is that you must pass both the assignment and the TEE independently. You cannot compensate for a failed assignment with high TEE marks.

4. IGNOU CBCS CGPA to Percentage Conversion Formula

For students enrolled under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) such as BAG, BCOMG, BSCG, or new Master's programs, IGNOU awards a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on a 10-point scale. The official UGC-approved conversion formula is:

Official Formula Percentage (%) = CGPA × 9.5

For example, if your Grade Card shows a final CGPA of 7.4, your equivalent percentage is 7.4 × 9.5 = 70.30%.

5. Official IGNOU Division Classification

IGNOU awards final academic divisions strictly based on your credit-weighted percentage without round-offs:
