Understanding Your IGNOU Grades

Everything you need to know about how IGNOU calculates your final percentage from your grade card.

The 30:70 Weightage Rule

Calculating your percentage manually can be confusing because IGNOU doesn't print a final percentage. For standard theory subjects, they apply a specific weightage:

  • Assignments = 30% Weightage
  • Term-End Exam (TEE) = 70% Weightage

Credit-Weighted Averages

Many simple calculators just add up your totals and divide by the number of subjects. This is incorrect.

IGNOU uses a credit system. An 8-credit course requires twice as much study time as a 4-credit course, so it impacts your final percentage twice as much. Our tool asks for your credits and computes the true weighted aggregate.

Strict Independent Passing Criteria

A critical rule many students miss: You cannot offset a failed assignment with a high TEE score. You must secure the minimum passing mark in BOTH components individually.

Program Type Asgn. Pass Mark TEE Pass Mark
Bachelor's Degree
35 / 100 35 / 100
Master's Degree
40 / 100 40 / 100
BCA, MCA
40 / 100 40 / 100

How to Calculate IGNOU Percentage (30:70 Weightage Explained)

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) uses a unique credit-weighted average system combined with a 30:70 weightage rule to calculate your final percentage. Because IGNOU Grade Cards do not explicitly state your final percentage, understanding this calculation is critical for applying to higher education or jobs.

1. The 30:70 Weightage Formula

For standard theory subjects, your final marks are calculated by taking 30% of your Assignment marks and 70% of your Term-End Examination (TEE) marks.

  • Assignment Weightage: 30%
  • Term-End Exam (TEE) Weightage: 70%
  • Formula: (Assignment Marks × 0.30) + (TEE Marks × 0.70) = Subject Marks

2. Passing Marks for Bachelors and Masters

A crucial rule at IGNOU is that you must pass both the assignment and the TEE independently. You cannot compensate for a failed assignment with high TEE marks.

Program Level Passing Marks (Out of 100)
Bachelor's Degree (BA, BCOM, BSC, etc.) 35 / 100 (35%)
Master's Degree, BCA, MCA, Management 40 / 100 (40%)

3. Credit-Weighted Average Calculation

Once the individual subject marks are calculated using the 30:70 rule, IGNOU applies a credit weightage. Subjects with 8 credits have double the impact on your final percentage compared to subjects with 4 credits.

Instead of doing complex math, you can simply enter your marks in our IGNOU Percentage Calculator above to get your exact, credit-weighted aggregate instantly.

4. IGNOU CBCS CGPA to Percentage Conversion Formula

For students enrolled under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) such as BAG, BCOMG, BSCG, or new Master's programs, IGNOU awards a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on a 10-point scale. The official UGC-approved conversion formula is:

Official Formula Percentage (%) = CGPA × 9.5

For example, if your Grade Card shows a final CGPA of 7.4, your equivalent percentage is 7.4 × 9.5 = 70.30%.

5. Official IGNOU Division Classification

IGNOU awards final academic divisions strictly based on your credit-weighted percentage without round-offs:

Division Awarded Percentage Range Equivalent Grade
1st Division with Distinction 75.0% and above Grade A (Excellent)
1st Division 60.0% to 74.9% Grade B (Very Good)
2nd Division 50.0% to 59.9% Grade C (Good)
3rd Division / Pass 35.0% (UG) / 40.0% (PG) to 49.9% Grade D (Satisfactory)

Frequently Asked Questions

No. IGNOU requires you to pass the assignment and term-end exam independently. If you score below the passing mark (35 or 40) in your assignment, your subject status will remain "Not Completed" (Fail) regardless of your TEE score.
For most project courses, the weightage is flipped. The project report usually carries a 70% weightage, while the Viva-Voce carries a 30% weightage. You can select "Project (70/30)" in our calculator to handle this automatically.
No, the official IGNOU grade card only shows your raw marks (usually out of 100), letter grades, and the course status ("Completed" or "Not Completed"). You must manually calculate your percentage for resumes and higher education applications.
Under the IGNOU CBCS 10-point grading system, the official UGC-approved formula is: Percentage (%) = CGPA × 9.5. For instance, a CGPA of 7.2 corresponds to 7.2 × 9.5 = 68.4%.
If a course component was conducted out of 50 marks (frequent in 2-credit courses), IGNOU normalizes it to 100 on your Grade Card (Multiply by 2). Always input your scaled marks out of 100 into this calculator.
No. IGNOU strictly does not round up fractions. A final aggregate of 59.9% remains Second Division. You must achieve at least 60.0% to be classified in the First Division.
